With the exception of the first 20 minutes, Loddiswell’s performance in their penultimate away fixture was somewhat lacklustre. Travelling to Paignton for an evening fixture was never going to be easy; however the lack of belief and energy was disappointing.

Lodds started well, Maher’s early free kick beat the keeper but not the bar as the visitors set the pace. Soon after good play between Smallridge and Hammett allowed the latter to put Robey clear and he raced away before slotting the ball past the keeper. Lodds had one or two chances to extend the lead, but then seemed to think the game was a procession. Villa equalised when they broke down the right and converted the cross. This galvanised Villa with their workrate better than Lodds’. An unfortunate own goal gifted Villa a 2-1 half time lead.

Knowing that they had to improve, Lodds still seemed somewhat flat footed, but did create some half chances. Around the hour mark, Hurrell equalised with a powerful header from a corner. This should have been the signal for Lodds to go on and secure the win; however 5 minutes later Villa took the lead again. A cross from the left touchline ended up sailing over Head and into the far corner. Lodds pushed for the equaliser but for some reason just were not at the races in this game.

Loddiswell host Staverton and Landscove on Saturday (3pm kick off), before completing their season against Newton Spurs Reserves (away) next Wednesday evening.
